As Talon watched his friends leave the crime scene he silently berated himself for not talking to them. He was a coward. As much as he hated to admit it, it didn’t make it less true. He’d run from his mate, not out fear of hurting the man, but because he was afraid Gibson would never forgive him. Sure this way he wasn’t around his mate either, but it least it was by choice, not because Gibson demanded he leave.

His only light in an otherwise dark circumstance was that Gibson was still in the manor. Maybe it meant his mate was willing to forgive him. Of course it could just mean his team wouldn’t let him leave the safety of the house. But knowing Gibson, he would have found a way out if he really wanted to.

After flying away, Talon had done a lot of soul-searching. It had been hard to walk away from his mate, but allowing Gibson to be at risk wasn’t something he could allow. His hawk demanded he keep their mate safe. So Talon had done the only thing he could, he was going after the Cadre one by one. Since he didn’t know who was in charge of the rebels, he figured he’d start with those who were the biggest known threats.

For the Cadre, that was Tumo Caparino, the Cadre’s assassin. He just also happened to be a member. The man took loving your job to a whole new level. Tumo was a sick man, who loved to watch the life fade from a person’s eyes when he killed them. If Tumo could get them to beg for mercy, all the better.

Not having Rune’s computer skills, it had taken him nearly forty-eight hours before he found the man living in Juarez. It wasn’t until he’d followed him for a couple of days that Talon had realized Tumo had wanted to be found. The man had practically taken out an ad with his address on it. What Talon wasn’t sure was why.

There were plenty of reasons why Tumo deserved to die but Talon believed in their laws, he needed proof against the man before he could execute the assassin. As he started watching Tumo from afar, Talon became more and more concerned. Four days ago he’d watched as the man killed two innocent people as they walked home after a movie.

Talon had been too far away to stop him. The fact that Talon had witnessed the crime was enough to kill Tumo, but something didn’t seem right. Like the man was baiting someone. The question was, who?

There was no way he knew Talon was out here. For the most part Talon stayed in hawk form in order to keep a greater distance so Tumo wouldn’t know he was being watched. Twice more he watched as Tumo killed innocent civilians, each kill getting closer to the Alpha manor. After each kill, Tumo watched from a distance as Talon’s team worked the scene. As soon as Talon’s friends left, Tumo went back to the house he was renting.
